What should I do for severe arterial bleeding?
Immediate actions — first 60 seconds
1. Apply direct, uninterrupted pressure to the wound with sterile gauze or a clean towel. 2. Hold pressure continuously for a minimum of 3-5 minutes without lifting to check the wound.
If blood soaks through, add additional layers on top - never remove the base cloth, as doing so tears away forming blood clots. Apply a snug pressure bandage. Use a tourniquet only on limbs for life-threatening blood loss.
