What if my dog ingested suspected poison (e.g. rat bait, chocolate, human medication)?
Immediate actions — first 60 seconds
1. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directly instructed by a veterinarian. 2. Identify the toxic agent: secure the package, wrapper, or plant sample. 3. Call the emergency vet or poison control with your dog's weight, the substance, and time passed.
Inducing vomiting of corrosive substances (bleach, batteries, petroleum) causes severe esophageal burns. Keep the animal calm and cool. If instructed by a clinician to induce vomiting, use fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide at the exact dosage specified by the vet.
